What to Expect at Your Child’s First Toddler Music Class
Your little one dances to every song at home. Or maybe they love music but take a while to warm up around new people. Either way, a first music class can come with a few questions. Do they need to sit still? What if they only want to watch?
At Rise & Shine Play in Point Loma, Sing & Play gives babies, toddlers and preschoolers room to join in at their own pace. Here’s how to make that first visit feel a little more familiar.
Expect movement and room to explore
Sing & Play is led by Ms. Beth of Sunshine & Song SD. Classes bring together familiar songs, movement and instruments, with playful activities that may include bubbles or a parachute. Your child might dance, try an instrument, stay close to you or watch before joining in.
You don’t need to rehearse songs or teach your child how to participate before you come. Arrive ready to spend time together and follow their interest.
Watching is a perfectly good place to start
A new room, new faces and new sounds can be a lot to take in. If your child wants to sit with you at first, let that be their starting point. You can sing along, gently model a movement or simply enjoy the music together.
There’s no need to compare their response with the child across the room. A little one who watches quietly may still have a favorite moment to repeat at home.
Leave time for the whole visit
Each Sing & Play reservation includes 45 minutes of music and movement followed by 45 minutes of Open Play. That means there’s time to explore after class without packing up for another destination.
Think about the full outing when choosing a date: getting here, checking in, class, playtime and the trip home. Keep the rest of the morning simple if you can.
Bring the basics
Choose clothes your child can move in and bring socks for both children and adults. Rise & Shine is a shoe-free space, and everyone needs a completed waiver before entry. Packing your usual diaper-bag essentials can help you settle in without bringing a whole day’s worth of extras.
Sing & Play is offered weekly in a drop-in style, so you can try a class without committing to a full series. We recommend reserving ahead because space can fill.
