Rainy-Day and Hot-Day Activities for Toddlers in Point Loma and Nearby

Sometimes the weather changes the plan before you’ve even found everyone’s shoes. If the park doesn’t feel like the right outing today, there are indoor options for toddlers in Point Loma and elsewhere in San Diego.

Choose based on the kind of morning you want: room to move, time with books or a longer museum visit. These four ideas give you a starting point without turning the day into a full itinerary.

For movement and pretend play in Point Loma

Rise & Shine Play is an indoor play space and café on Shelter Island Drive, designed for children ages 0–5. Open Play gives little ones room to explore, imagine and return to a favorite activity while their caregivers stay nearby.

It can work well for meeting a friend or getting out of the house without planning several stops. Bring socks for children and adults, complete the waiver and reserve ahead when you can. Walk-in space is not guaranteed.

Check current Open Play sessions and admission. Check the schedule before heading over, especially for Thursday opening times and any separately announced weekend sessions.

For picture books at Point Loma Hervey Library

The Point Loma/Hervey Library has a children’s area on the first floor, including a sailboat reading room with portholes, a mast and sails. It’s an option for a visit built around choosing books and reading together.

You don’t have to plan around a program to enjoy books, but the branch calendar can help you find scheduled activities that suit your child’s age. Check the day’s opening hours before leaving home.

For a museum outing in downtown San Diego

If you have more time for travel and admission, consider The New Children’s Museum downtown. Its Wobbleland installation is for infants and toddlers ages 4 and under, with oversized soft food sculptures in a giant kitchen-sink setting.

That’s a specific age-limited area, so check options for any older siblings as well as current exhibit availability before planning the whole family’s visit.

For hands-on exploring in Balboa Park

The Fleet Science Center’s Kid City is designed for children ages 5 and under. Its play areas include a Ball Wall and a Supermarket area, offering another option when you’re ready for a bigger outing beyond Point Loma.

Allow time for getting there, parking and the trip home. Check current museum admission and exhibition details before you go.

Pick one place and leave room to change the plan

A short outing can be plenty. Choose the option that fits your child’s energy and your available time, check current hours and availability, and keep the rest of the day flexible. The goal is a place to enjoy being together.
